Note to Overman:

See even Ricky can get thru a event, without getting himself a "blackeye" :-) from Security.

Note to everybody else: it's a inside joke from a previous episode of the overcast. (Episode 05)

A true audio odyssey. I was in LA for Siggraph and happened to pass Ricky here and there as we criss-crossed the show during that week. With his m-audio recorder held out Ricky moved through Siggraph like a man on a mission, inside a visual amusement park. Siggraph is a fantastic conference and you can see diehards walking about with words on their t-shirts that say things like, 'Siggraph 80,' as in 1980. Siggraph started in Boulder, Colorado and many people have attended every meeting since. I'm sure that they could not have imagined what an important event it would become way back when it was mainly scientists collaborating on the use of code to generate simple images and animation. The theme this year was 'Evolve,' and it could not have been more appropriate. The evolution of this industry is stunning.

Thanks to Ricky for sharing his journey and to Phil for the music. Phil, I had no idea you played the digital didgeridoo. I had the pleasure to traverse this soundscape on a plane and it was a fitting soundtrack for the dark and roaring stillness through the night sky. You guys always keep it fresh and that rocks.

Plays fine for me too, using the Flash player or downloading the file. Are you downloading it for offline listening, Kate? If so, perhaps it timed out on you?

Oh, man, thank you so much for editing this huge mass of recordings into something creative, strange and fun. Sorry for not doing it myself, but I wanted to get an objective take on what was interesting sound-wise. The idea of using somewhat experimental music as bridges is a fantastic idea. A lot of good music there, Phil. Performing it live must have been a lot of fun (and challenging, too). I especially liked the music just before the Pantry sequence....mnn, dark and futuristic. You have so much talent as a composer.

This collection of sounds is only a small fragment of everything I recorded there. The variety and mass of sound was phenomenal. I could have spent the entire Festival just recording sound. I hope that those who make it to the end of this Overcast will find it an interesting journey. Personally, I loved the Exhibition hall sequence and the Subway - On the Way sequence. Please, feel free to use any of these sound beds in your projects. Just remember they are Creative Commons and give us credit.

Definitely follow the links if you want to learn more about Siggraph. It's an extraordinary event that has given me great inspiration for the upcoming Machinima Expo in Montreal this fall. And thanks again, Phil, for putting this together.
